Bush backs decision to reject Iranian leader's Ground Zero visit
U.S. President George W. Bush said Thursday he backs the decision by New York authorities to deny a request by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to tour Ground Zero, the site of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.
"I can understand why they would not want somebody running a country who is the state sponsor of terror down at the site," Bush said at a White House press conference.
According to media reports, Ahmadinejad asked to lay a wreath at Ground Zero. However, New York authorities said his request was rejected citing security concerns as well as because construction is taking place at the site.
The twin towers of the World Trade Center collapsed when they were hit by two planes during the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks and thousands of people were killed in the attacks.
Ties between the United States and Iran have been tense as the United States is pushing for a new U.N. Security Council resolution to punish Iran for its defiance on the nuclear issue.
